Temporal changes in gamma dose rates in the Esk Estuary, UK
نویسنده
چکیده
Over the last 30 years there has been a reduction in the radioactive discharges from the UK’s Sellafield site. Radionuclide activity concentrations in the environment around Sellafield have declined as a result. However, routine monitoring results from the nearby Esk Estuary show a less clear trend, with fluctuations in gamma dose rate measurements being reported from year to year. A comprehensive survey (n = 576) of gamma dose rates in the Esk Estuary was undertaken in 2007 and the data compared to a similar survey carried out in 1989. There was a highly statistically significant decrease in the external gamma dose rates within the Esk Estuary between 1989 and 2007. The measured total gamma dose rate range in 2007 was 0.064 – 0.235 Gy h−1with a mean of 0.123 Gy h−1. This equates to a maximum exposure of 0.200 Sv h−1. There was no evidence of large-scale sediment redistribution under current conditions. However, there was limited evidence to suggest that part of the reason for the reduction in measured dose rates was the burial of contaminated sediment deposits by uncontaminated sediments transported by tidal processes.

Gamma background radiation measurement in Lorestan province, Iran
Background: The exposure of human being to ionize radiation from natural sources is a continuing, inescapable feature of life on earth. Direct measurement of absorbed dose rates in air has been carried out in many countries of the world during the last few decades. Such investigations can be useful for assessment of public dose rates, the performance of epidemiological studies, and kee...

Copepods are the main zooplankton assemblages in most tropical and semi-tropical estuaries. In this research, copepod population dynamics were investigated in Helleh River estuary, Persian Gulf during four seasons beginning from summer 2011 to spring 2012. Samples were taken using plankton net with mesh size of 140 µm and vertical towing from 5 fixed-stations in mid-season. Results showed that...

Background & Aims: Studying about background radiation is important because human beings are continuously exposed to these radiations which leave energy in tissues and the transferred energy leads to undesirable biologic effects. The level of background radiation differs in indoor and outdoor places. Since, people spend more time indoors, in this research environmental gamma dose rate for indoo...

Introduction: All of the people worldwide are exposed to low levels of radiation. Cancer induction and genetic disorders are among the hazards of low level exposure. In some cases, radiation close to hot springs is higher than normal areas due to a high concentration and the decay products of Ra-226. Given the use of hot springs by the general public because of their therapeutic p...
